Former task force works together to save Chen

Dembe is released from the hospital and works with the old task force to save the kidnapped Chen and his family. Red (James Spader) also returns to help catch up with current Skinner Graham Anderson (Patrick Murney). Red says he’s helping the task force because that’s what Liz would have wanted.

Skinner asks Chen to go to his office and download the software for the microchips. Aram (Amir Arison) and Alina (Laura Sohn) are confused to see Chen return to work. Unaware that Chen is only entering his office because the Skinner is holding his family hostage, the duo embark on a car chase with him.

Red sets out to invoke the charter in ‘The Blacklist’ Season 9 Episode 1

Red meets Skinner’s predecessor, Vincent (Matt Malloy) again. He suggests that Vincent invoke the charter to remove the current Skinner. Vincent explains that this cannot be done without consulting his predecessor, Alberta (Kathleen Chalfant). Vincent and Red find Alberta in a nursing home and find the staff to let her out. Alberta asks Red for a kiss in exchange for the charter invocation.

Things go wrong when the team tries to cheat The Skinner

Aram and Alina convince Chen to give Skinner some bogus software so they can track his location and save his family. Unfortunately, the Skinner enlists an IT professor to make sure the program is real. Chen breaks down and confesses that it’s a fake and that the FBI is waiting for him outside.

The Skinner shoots Chen’s wife in the leg to convince Dembe, Ressler, and Alina to show up and give up their guns. When all seems lost, Red shows up with Vincent and Alberta. The old Skinners vote against the current one. Anderson laughs at them, but his henchmen respect the organization and point their guns at Anderson, shoot him and kill him. Red tells Vincent that he will find someone to be the new Skinner.

Later, the team regroups. Alina notices that she misses being a field agent, and Aram doesn’t deny that he also misses the task force. Red shows up at Senator Panabaker’s (Deirdre Lovejoy) house and makes some sort of deal. He later announces to the team that his immunity deal has been reinstated and that Panabaker will allow them to return to the task force. “Be careful what you wish for,” Aram tells Alina.

Ressler walks into Liz’s old office. Dembe finds him and tells Ressler that he’s the reason he became an agent. The final scene shows Red receiving an “S” tattoo, confirming that he will take Anderson’s place as the new Skinner.
