PISCATAWAY, NJ – No.4 women’s football Rutgers will host Iowa in the Big Ten semifinals on Thursday, November 4. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Yurcak Field live on Big Ten Network. Entry and parking are free for the tournament hosted by Rutgers.

THE LATEST RELEASE FROM RU | In Sunday’s quarterfinal, Rutgers (16-2, 10-0 Big Ten) beat No. 8 seeded Wisconsin in a 1-0 shutout to advance to the semifinals. The Scarlet Knights extended their winning streak on the program to 12-game winning streak, qualifying for their third straight Big Ten Tournament semi-final.

Second year midfielder Sara brocious scored the victory over the Badgers, scoring his fourth goal of the season. Senior goalkeeper Meagan McClelland recorded seven saves, a season-high, for RU’s 10th clean sheet and sixth against a conference opponent.

BIG TEN HONORS | After the program’s first Big Ten title, Frankie Tagliaferri was named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, Gabby Provenzano Big Ten Defender of the Year and Riley tiernan the Big Ten Freshman of the year. The three Player of the Year awards mark the highest number in a single year for the Scarlet Knights and the first multiple awards in a single year since two in 2015.

Amirah Ali (First team), Riley tiernan (First team), Frankie Tagliaferri (First team), Gabby Provenzano (First team), Becci Fluchel (Second team), and Meagan McClelland (Third Team) all won All-Big Ten honors. Riley tiernan, Kylie Daigle and Banks Kassidy were selected from the All-Freshman team, while Shea Holland was named the recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for Rutgers.

The Head Coach Mike O’Neill won the Coach of the Year award. In his eighth season at the helm, O’Neill guided the program by setting a plethora of records, picking up his 100e career victory along the way. A full release on the awards can be found here.

ATTACK | A total of 18 different Scarlet Knights helped mark this year. RU outscored opponents 53-12 that year, including 13 different scorers, 11 multi-goal contributors and 52 team assists.

Frankie Tagliaferri leads the team with 31 points (12g, 7a) over the season. Amirah Ali follows with 21 points (8g, 5a) while Riley tiernan has 18 points (4g, 10a). Allison Lowrey (5g, 4a) scored 14 points, Sam kroeger (5g, 3a) and Sara brocious (4g, 5a) each have 13 points to round contributors of points to two digits.

Rutgers ranks sixth nationally in offensive scoring with 2.94 goals per game in 18 games. The Scarlet Knights lead the Big Ten and are in the top 10 nationwide in total goals (5e -53), total number of assists (7th – 52) and total points (5e – 158). Tiernan ranks 16th in the NCAA with 10 assists, while Tagliaferri ranks 16th with 31 points overall.

FOOTBALL CLOSURE | The Scarlet Knights have recorded 10 shutouts this season, including six against opponents from the Big Ten. Rutgers held six of the conference’s 11 opponents to eight total shots or less in each clash, as well as all 11 to seven shots on goal or less. Overall, RU held eight opponents to three shots on goal or less. Since 2019, RU has held 46 consecutive opponents to single-digit penalties in every game.

BIG TEN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK | Rutgers has won 13 weekly conference awards this regular season, the most in a single season for the program. Honors included offensive honors for Frankie Tagliferri (8/31) and Amirah Ali (10/26), Defensive awards for Gabby Provenzano (9/7 & 9/28), Becci Fluchel (9/21 & 10/12) and Allison lynch (10/5 & 10/26), Goalkeeper honors for Meagan McClelland (10/26) and Freshman recognition for Riley tiernan (8/31, 10/12 & 10/19) and Banks Kassidy (9/21).

MAC HERMANN TROPHY | Elders Amirah Ali and Frankie Tagliaferri are named to the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Watchlist. The trophy is awarded to the National Player of the Year. This is the first time that two Scarlet Knights have been added to the roster in the same season.

SENIOR CLASS AWARD | Elders Gabby Provenzano and Frankie Tagliafferi are nominated for the Senior CLASS 2021 award. The award recognizes student-athletes who excel on and off the field. This is the second year in a row that RU has a nominee for the award, as a classmate Amirah Ali was named a finalist and first-team selection in 2020-21.
Tagliaferri was ranked among the 10 finalists for the award. Nationwide fan voting is now open to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through November 22. Fan votes will be combined with Division I media and head coach votes to determine the winner. Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced at the 2021 NCAA Men’s and Women’s College Cup® Championships in December.

IN THE RANKS | Rutgers is ranked in the Top 25 for the 12th consecutive week of the year and the seventh in a row in the Top 10, making the jump to 4th in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll. Rank # 4 is the highest ranking in program history, winning two votes for the top spot this week. The Scarlet Knights are ranked third on the most recent RPI leaderboard of the season. RU is also ranked # 5 by Top Drawer Soccer.
