There are five NHL games on Wednesday with the Avalanche, Maple Leafs and Oilers all notable favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook. However, the injury-ridden Penguins proved Tuesday that early-season upheaval should come as a surprise. Additionally, a number of familiar names are missing from their opener, including Auston Matthews (wrist), Nathan MacKinnon (COVID-19), Nicklas Backstrom (hip), Carey Price (staff / knee) and Mark Scheifele (suspension. ) to name a few.

Top Line Stacks

Oilers vs. Canucks

Zach Hyman ($ 5,900) – Connor McDavid ($ 8,300) – Jesse Puljujarvi ($ 4,400)

The proven chemistry between McDavid and Puljujarvi should match Hyman’s game well. McDavid and Puljujarvi scored 4.71 goals per 60 minutes last season, and the Canucks allowed the third most dangerous scoring chances and sixth goals per hour. Vancouver made a number of notable changes in the offseason, but even with improved defensive play, the Canucks will likely remain a favorable matchup most nights.

Rangers in capitals

Artemi Panarin ($ 7,100) – Ryan Strome ($ 4,600) – Kaapo Kakko ($ 3,300)

There’s a great combination of upside and value with New York’s second line. Panarin is second in the league in points by 60 minutes over the past two seasons, and the line clicked for a respectable 4.22 goals by 60 last season in 142: 04 of shared ice time.

Superstar to build

Patrick Kane, CHI at LOC ($ 7,000) – A potential target against the grain, Kane’s salary is reasonable, and he could go under the radar with that much star power in the player pool. The Avalanche should probably also be seen as a formidable opponent after finishing last season with the third fewest goals against per game. Still, Kane ranks sixth in points and fifth in shots over the past three seasons, so the bright side is there.

Value in case of infringement

Cole Caufield, LUN to TOR ($ 4,900) – That’s a reasonable salary to target Caufield. He showed his good side late last season and through the playoffs with a respectable eight goals, nine assists, 78 shots and 146 attempts in 30 games. He could also fly slightly under the radar.

Nick Ritchie, TOR vs. MON ($ 3,900) – There obviously shouldn’t be too much stock in the preseason stats, but Ritchie has scored three goals on 16 shots and 20 attempts in three games and is expected to skate on the No.1 line with John Tavares and Mitch Marner on Wednesday. Montreal also has a lot of unknowns with veterans Shea Weber (ankle) and Carey Price (knee / staff) out of roster.

Goalkeeper

Connor Hellebuyck, WPG at ANH ($ 7,900) – The Ducks scored the league’s fewest goals per 60 minutes last season, and Hellebuyck has a .920 save percentage in the past two years. Plus, the Jets are the favorites and Hellebuyck’s salary doesn’t break the bank.

Igor Shesterkin, NYR at WAS ($ 7,600) – There’s no denying Shesterkin’s advantage, and the Capitals could even do without captain Alex Ovechkin with a lower-body injury. Shesterkin also allowed two goals or less in 19 of 35 appearances last season, so while there is still a little potential for an explosion, it’s part of his paycheck.

Value on defense

Neal Pionk, WPG at ANH ($ 5,000) – After registering 25 power play points in his first season with the Jets, Pionk was relegated to the No. 2 unit for most of last season. He is expected to return to the top unit to start this season, which should skyrocket Pionk’s fantastic value. Add in his willingness to block shots and the game that should be favorable against Anaheim, and he is a solid target on his salary scale on Wednesday.

Rasmus Sandin, TOR vs. MON ($ 2,500) – At minimum wage, Sandin is a potential thief. He should see plenty of starts in the offensive zone and favorable five-on-five clashes while enjoying some secondary power play time. While expectations should probably be brought under control, Sandin is set to take a notable step forward this season. The relief of the cap alone is precious.

Power-play defender

Cale Makar, COL vs. CHI ($ 6,600) – The 22-year-old star has paced all defenders in points by 60 minutes over the past two seasons and is expected to continue to see top-notch attacking minutes in 2021-22. Maker recorded 22 power-play points averaging 4:11 man-advantage ice time last year. Expect him to be a popular target, however.

Tyson Barrie, EDM vs. VAN ($ 5,900) – The move to Edmonton was a resounding success for Barrie. He was second in points by 60 minutes with defensemen while amassing 23 points on the power play as a quarterback for the powerful Edmonton No.1 unit. That salary probably doesn’t match Barrie’s advantage either, as he’s an affordable addition to an Oilers stack.
